Bees are among the most important insects on Earth, and their role in nature goes far beyond producing honey. One of the most vital contributions bees make is pollination. As a bee travels from flower to flower collecting nectar, grains of pollen cling to its fuzzy body. When the bee visits the next flower, some of that pollen rubs off, fertilizing the plant. Scientists estimate that about one-third of the food humans eat depends on pollination by bees and other insects. Fruits, vegetables, and nuts — from almonds to zucchini — rely on this process. Without bees, entire ecosystems and food supplies would be in serious danger.

Beyond their work as pollinators, bees are also extraordinary communicators and builders. When a worker bee discovers a rich source of nectar, it returns to the hive and performs a series of movements called the waggle dance. This dance tells other bees exactly how far away the nectar is and in which direction to fly. Inside the hive, bees construct perfectly shaped six-sided cells out of wax to store honey and raise their young. The geometric precision of a honeycomb has fascinated mathematicians for centuries, because the hexagonal shape uses the least amount of wax while holding the most honey.

Unfortunately, bee populations around the world have been declining at an alarming rate. Pesticides used on crops, the destruction of natural habitats, disease, and climate change have all contributed to a condition known as colony collapse disorder, in which entire hives of bees disappear. Researchers, farmers, and community members are working together to reverse this trend by planting pollinator-friendly gardens, reducing pesticide use, and protecting wild meadows. Protecting bees means protecting the food systems and natural environments that all living things depend on.
