Read the passage, then answer the questions about main ideas, key details, and summarizing.
1. Read the passage below. Then answer the questions that follow.
The Amazing World of Bees
Bees are some of the most important insects on Earth. They play a vital role in pollination, which is the process of moving pollen from one flower to another. When bees travel from flower to flower to collect nectar, tiny grains of pollen stick to their fuzzy bodies. This pollen is then carried to the next flower the bee visits. Without bees doing this work, many plants could not produce fruit, seeds, or new plants. Scientists estimate that about one-third of all the food humans eat depends on pollination by bees and other insects.
Bees also work together in remarkable ways inside their hives. A single hive can contain up to 60,000 bees, and each bee has a specific job to do. Worker bees gather food, care for young bees, and build the honeycomb. The queen bee lays thousands of eggs every day. Drone bees help the queen produce offspring. This organized system keeps the hive running smoothly and allows the colony to survive through changing seasons.
Unfortunately, bee populations around the world are shrinking. Pesticides used on farms can harm or kill bees. The destruction of wildflower meadows takes away bees' food sources. Disease and parasites also threaten hive health. Scientists and farmers are working together to find solutions, such as planting bee-friendly gardens, reducing harmful pesticide use, and protecting natural habitats. Protecting bees means protecting the food supply for people and animals all over the world.

2. Use the organizer below to record two main ideas from the passage and one key detail that supports each main idea. The first main idea has been started for you.
Main Idea 1: Bees are essential for pollination and food production.
Main Idea 2: Bee populations are in danger and need protection.
3. Which sentence best states a main idea found in paragraph 2 of the passage?
A Bees are the only insects that make honey. B Bees work together in organized roles to keep the hive running smoothly. C A queen bee is the most important bee in any hive. D Worker bees are more important than drone bees. 4. Look at paragraph 3 of the passage. Name two key details from that paragraph that support the main idea that bee populations are in danger. Use information from the text in your answer.
