Use fraction models, explain your reasoning, and justify your answers for each problem. Show all work.
1. Look at the fraction strip below. Name two fractions that are equivalent to 1 2 . Explain how the strip shows they are equal.
2. Plot the fraction 3 4 on the number line. Then write one fraction equivalent to 3 4 and explain how you know it belongs at the same point.
3. Priya says 2 3 and 4 5 are equivalent because both fractions have an even numerator and a larger denominator. Is she correct? Explain your reasoning using multiplication or a visual model to support your answer.
4. The bar below is divided into 6 equal parts. Exactly 4 parts are shaded. Write the fraction shown. Then explain how you would change the model to show an equivalent fraction with a denominator of 3, and write that equivalent fraction.
5. Jamal ate 3 4 of his granola bar. Mei ate some of an identical granola bar that was cut into 12 equal pieces. Mei says she ate the same amount as Jamal. How many pieces did Mei eat? Explain how you know your answer is correct using multiplication.
6. Omar generated these three fractions and claims they are all equivalent: 2 5 , 4 10 , and 6 20 . Determine which fractions are truly equivalent to 2 5 and which are not. For each fraction, show the multiplication or division you used to check, and explain your reasoning in a complete sentence.
