The Monarch Butterfly's Amazing Journey
Every fall, millions of monarch butterflies begin one of the longest insect migrations in the world. They travel from the forests of Canada and the northern United States all the way to the mountains of central Mexico. Some monarchs fly more than 3,000 miles to reach their winter home.
Scientists have wondered how monarchs find their way. Monarchs use the position of the sun as a compass. They also sense the angle of sunlight to know which direction is south. This inner sense helps them stay on course even on cloudy days.
When spring arrives, the monarchs begin flying north again. Along the way, they lay eggs on milkweed plants. The caterpillars that hatch from those eggs will continue the journey north. No single butterfly completes the full round trip, but together the generations complete the cycle every year.
