The Honey Bees of Maplewood Farm
Every summer, Amara and her grandfather visit Maplewood Farm to learn about honey bees. The farm is run by a beekeeper named Mr. Reyes. He wears a special white suit and a hat with a veil to protect his face when he checks the hives.
Honey bees live together in large groups called colonies. Each colony has one queen bee, thousands of worker bees, and a few hundred drones. The worker bees do most of the jobs in the hive. They gather nectar from flowers and bring it back to make honey. They also keep the hive clean and take care of the young bees.
Amara asked Mr. Reyes why bees are so important. He explained that bees help plants grow by moving pollen from flower to flower. This is called pollination. Without bees, many fruits and vegetables would not grow. Mr. Reyes smiled and said, 'We need bees just as much as they need flowers.'
