The Garden Contest
Mei had spent every afternoon for three weeks tending her small garden plot in the community garden. She watered her tomato plants, pulled weeds, and tied the drooping stems to wooden stakes. Her neighbor, Omar, had started his garden at the same time, but he gave up after the first week when the work became difficult.
The community garden was holding a contest for the best-looking plot at the end of the month. Mei wanted to win, but she also noticed that Omar looked disappointed every time he walked past his dry, weedy patch. One afternoon, Mei knocked on his door and offered to help him get his garden back in shape. Together they worked for two afternoons, watering and weeding until Omar's plot looked healthy again.
On contest day, the judges awarded Mei first place. But when the head judge asked Mei to speak, she said the real victory was working together. Omar smiled and promised that next season he would not give up when things got hard. As the two neighbors walked home, Mei realized that helping Omar had made her feel more proud than any ribbon could.
